What To Drink While Watching The Super Bowl

Every holiday comes with its own traditions. For football fans like us, and particularly myself, watching the Super Bowl is sacred with many fine rituals built in, including ordering the original Sloppy Joes from Town Hall Deli. This year, we’re not going to let COVID beat us, and will be joining fans from 130 countries around the world in watching Super Bowl LV. Personally, my rule is to root first for the team with the most Rutgers Football Players on it, but sadly that’s not a factor this year.

Of course, enjoying the right snacks and drinks during the game are a must, and one of the questions we get asked every year on social media is “What do you drink when you want to support your team in the Super Bowl?” We’ve sorted through 2020’s award-winning wines, beers, and spirits, and below are our suggestions for what to imbibe during the big game, arranged by association to this year’s Super Bowl teams and key players.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Beer

For the first time ever, the Super Bowl is being played in the home stadium of a team playing in the Super Bowl.  So lets tip our hats to Florida and pour a cold one from Veza Sur Brewery which won Florida Brewery of the Year at the 2020 New York International Beer Competition.  A Miami based brewery with American roots, they make craft lagers, IPAs and sours.

Wine

Tom Brady’s 10th appearance in the Super Bowl just reinforces his GOAT status. Tom grew up in the backyard of San Francisco and knows his California wines, so open a bottle from McKenzie-Mueller Vineyards which won Napa Valley Winery of the Year in the 2020 New York International Wine Competition. Based in Carneros, the family-owned winery makes small lots of single varietal wines.

Spirits

You may need a whiskey or two to calm your nerves, depending on how much of a friendly wager you made.  A good whiskey from nearby St Petersburg, FL is Kozuba & Sons is High Wheat Rye Whiskey which won a Gold in the 2020 New York International Spirits Competition. Other great players who need mention and will hopefully be suiting up are Rob Gronkowski Antonio Brown and Mike Evans. A craft distillery, with a Polish heritage, their Hight Wheat Rye Whiskey is made from a mash bill of 65% rye and 35% wheat, fermented for 3 days and aged for 5 years.

Kansas City Chiefs

Beer

This is the second trip to the Super Bowl for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.   He is all-in with Kansas City and Missouri and recently bought a minority share in the MLB Kansas City Royals  so expect them to drink a few beers from Missouri Beer Company who are 2020 Missouri Brewery of the Year at New York International Beer Competition.  A microbrewery offering craft beer, they are well-known in the St. Louis area.

Wine

Before Patrick Mahomes became a NFL Hall of Famer, he played college football at Texas Tech. 15 miles from campus you will find English Newsom Cellars, the Texas Winery of the Year at the 2020 New York International Wine Competition. Family-owned and located in Lubbock, TX, the Newsoms took over in 2018 and now proudly run one of the largest wine production facilities in Texas, making 100% Texas wines.

Spirits

Whenever Patrick Mahomes starts to scramble, Kansas City Mafia need to have a stiff drink in their hand.  Fill your glass with Gin from Restless Spirits Distilling the 2020 Missouri Distillery of the Year at the New York International Spirits Competition.  Family owned, they have been making unique Irish- and American-inspired spirits going on 6 years.

Other great players who we expect to make an impact include Travis Kelse and Tyreek Hill Le’Veon Bell.

Our prediction? Kansas City 35 Tampa Bay 17

Enjoy the game and drink as safely as possible!
