Chris Coyne and Michael Memsic founded Sanitas Brewing Company in Boulder, Colorado in 2013, the fulfillment of a personal dream for both of them, one that was born while they were working at Boulder Beer Co. After their brewing shifts, they’d get together to chat about beer and innovation. During these conversations over beers, they kept spotting owls: once after a beer they were brewing and then a year later when they saw the Sanitas Brewing Company space for the first time. The owl started having significance around the beers they made which is a big reason why it’s incorporated in their logo.

Ten years later, they’ve brewed more than 65 different beer styles. They currently have eight year-round beers, six seasonals and many rotating options. A favorite of the brewery staff is the Everyday Mountain Pilsner. “This beer is a classic go-to pilsner and a favorite among the team. We partnered with Boulder Open Space Conservancy on this beer, so a portion of the proceeds benefit the restoration efforts on Mount Sanitas,” shares marketing manager Jordan Harris.

Another favorite seasonal is Earl’s Out, a lemon sour brewed with locally sourced earl gray tea. “This is a partnership beer we brew every June for Pride month in partnership with Out Boulder County. We source and use local earl grey tea in the recipe. It’s fun, delicious and gives back to a great cause,” says Harris.

A New Location in 2023

Today the brewery has more than 30 employees and two tasting rooms, one in Boulder and one in Englewood that opened in June of 2023. The Boulder taproom has loads of events including a Monday night running club, Tuesday night bike ride, and Wednesday night music series. They’ve recently started to do live music at their Englewood location and are looking to ramp up events there as well in the coming months. Both taprooms are open in the mornings and sell coffee to act as a coworking space for people who live in the area. Each tasting room has food as well, with tacos being served in Boulder from McDevitt Taco Supply and burgers from C-Burger in Englewood. “Our taprooms are welcoming and offer something for everyone whether you’re trying to grab a craft beer with friends, order some lunch, or enjoy a morning coffee,” says Harris.

Colorado Proud

Sanitas is excited to be part of the Colorado brewing scene, because, as Harris reflects, it offers a unique brewing environment. “Colorado is the best place to brew beer for many reasons. The water chemistry in Colorado is ideal with an agreeable mix of magnesium, sodium, sulfates, bicarbonates and calcium making it ideal ‘hard water’ for brewing,” noted Harris. “Colorado has also long been a desired place for craft beer lovers. The local support around craft beer makes it ideal for crafting unique recipes and selling to the local community and tourists alike.”

Looking for Sanitas beers? Their beers are packaged in 12 oz 6-packs or 16-oz 4-packs and they distribute primarily in Colorado across the Front Range. They are working towards expanding our distribution footprint as well.

“We like to call our beers, ‘bring you together beers’, so when people enjoy our beers we want them to enjoy it with friends and the community of folks that visit our taprooms” says Harris.
