Coonawarra might not have the same global clout as Australia’s bigger wine regions—yet—but those in the know will tell you it’s the quiet achiever of the wine world. Nestled between South Australia and Victoria on the scenic Limestone Coast, it’s a dreamy patch of vineyards, bold reds, and passionate winemakers.
Pastoralist and politician John Riddoch saw the potential back in the 1800s, and today, winemakers are still proving him right. Thanks to its renowned terra rossa soil, Coonawarra is turning out some of the country’s most exciting wines. Add in welcoming cellar doors and a growing buzz, and it’s clear—Coonawarra isn’t just Australia’s best-kept secret anymore, it’s officially on the must-visit list.

If you’re heading into Coonawarra from the north, Bellwether Wines should be your first stop—and not just because it’s conveniently placed. Housed in an 1868 shearing shed, this quirky, art-filled space is where history meets a deep love of winemaking. As Coonawarra’s first cellar door, it offers a laid-back yet thoughtful introduction to the region’s best drops. Want to linger a little longer? Pitch a tent or go all in with a bell tent glamping experience, complete with a bottle of their signature wine. Tastings are available every day, and if you’re feeling peckish, pre-order a meal three days in advance—everything comes fresh from their organic garden. Be sure to try the shiraz, but don’t skip their tempranillo and barbera.

John and Melissa didn’t plan to stay in Coonawarra, but the land—and its cabernet—had other ideas. Fast forward thirty years and Ottelia is a testament to their passion for winemaking and the region’s signature style. Their cabernet sauvignon, packed with dark berries, blackcurrants, and a hint of mint and violets reflects the region’s rich terroir. The newly revamped tasting room is as stylish as it is inviting, making it the ideal place to swirl, sip, and savor. If you’re after something a little lighter, their riesling and pinot gris are bright, zesty, and ideal for a lazy afternoon.
Ottelia is open Thursday to Monday, but don’t leave it to chance—book ahead, especially if you’re planning to try the restaurant’s no-fuss, chef-curated menu.

There’s something about Brand’s Laira that just feels right. Sitting pretty on Coonawarra’s legendary “terra rossa” strip, this winery has been growing grapes since 1893. Their Flagship One Seven One Cabernet, which won Best Coonawarra Cabernet at the 2017 International Wine Challenge, is just the start. After a 2019 renovation, the cellar door mixes the best of both worlds—a beautifully preserved historic shed and a sleek, modern dining area complete with a fireplace. A one-hour tasting will reveal just why Coonawarra is one of Australia’s best-kept wine secrets, and if you’re after something to nibble on, the light lunch of local cheeses and meats is the perfect pairing.

It only took one wine to put John Parker and Parker Estate on the global wine map. His First Growth cabernet sauvignon, a bold rival to Bordeaux’s finest, didn’t just turn heads—it won multiple awards, including the prestigious Penfold Hyland Trophy and was ranked as the sixth highest Bordeaux-style at the 1991 International Wine Challenge in London.
Sure, Parker Estate is offering more than just wine these days—craft beer and gin tastings have found their way onto the menu, too. But the wine is still the star. You can dive into their impressive fine wine portfolio at the cellar door, or if you're in the mood for a more relaxed experience, grab a drink and some food and enjoy the quintessential Australian winery atmosphere on the lawns. The Parker Estate pies are another essential Australian experience—both are made with wine.
