The Blowjob Shot & 4 Sexy Variations
The Blow Job Shot
Were the 1980s and 90s the crudest era in cocktail history? Many claim it to be so. This was the era that gave rise to the Fuzzy Navel, The Ball Banger, and Sex on the Beach, popular cocktails that seemed to define an era.
I will admit, I was hesitant to write about this subject, being a woman who was behind the bar for many years. You would usually find me eye-rolling so hard I feared I might lose my eyes in my skull when customers ordered drinks with sexual names, as often, they were ordered to elicit a response from me or to flirt. Some allege the shot’s popularity diminished by the late 80s, yet I personally refute that claim; the Blowjob Shot thrived throughout the 1990s.
There has been much discussion about these types of concoctions being ‘problematic’ in drinking culture today. But is it the drink that’s the problem or the name? If we strip away the name, pardon the pun, can we examine the drink without judgment? But this drink presents a problem: its prescribed method of drinking. No hands, just use your mouth to pick up the shot and knock it back. Let the giggles ensue.
While some sources describe it as an enduring party favorite, popular among younger adults and at college town bars and clubs, others describe it as an enduring nod to a time in drinks history that should be forgotten. But hey, here we are. I’m writing about the Blowjob Shot, and you’re reading it. I don’t think anyone would have imagined that the Blowjob Shot would endure; it even stole a scene in Deadpool!
The Blow Job Shot
The Blow Job Shot
You are going to love this drink or hate it; rarely is there a middle ground with drinks composed of just liqueurs. It’s sweet, and it’s viscous. If you have a sweet tooth and are a fan of Amaretto, you’re going to love it. The Blowjob shot is a layered drink comprising an Irish cream like Baileys, an almond liqueur like Amaretto, and whipped cream. And as mentioned earlier, consumed hands-free.
½ oz amaretto liqueur
⅕ oz Irish cream
Whipped cream
Pour the amaretto into a shot glass first then the Irish cream and fill the remainder of the glass with whipped cream.
Hitting the scene
The Blowjob Shot hit the scene in an era where shooting poor-tasting alcohol was common. Take a shot of tequila, wince and then quickly lick salt off your hand and have a squeeze of lime juice, wince again. Take a shot of cheap whiskey and try not to hurl after it’s down your gullet. Or shoot a shot glass full of a viscous, sweet, artificially flavored liqueur and pretend you like it. These were common drinking practices in the 80s and 90s. You might ask yourself, why go to all the trouble to layer different liqueurs if you’re just shooting it. Ah ha, there lies the million-dollar question that I always asked myself. Well, it looks cool, and the flavors will hit you at different points when layered, and the other reason I won’t mention here.
Modernizing the Blowjob Shot?
Should we modernize this shot? No, leave it alone and call it something else if the name offends you. Not every cocktail needs to be fixed. Can we? Yes, we can create cocktail riffs that are super fun and delicious. Here are some fantastic variations of the Blowjob Shot that are fun and easy to craft at home. And my advice is, take the time to sip and savor these cocktails with one hand or two.
Irish Cream Martini
Irish Cream Martini
What if the Blow Job shot was a cocktail? That's basically what the Irish Cream Martini is.
1 oz dry gin or vodka
1 oz Amaretto
1 oz Baileys Irish Cream
1.5 oz cream
Cocoa powder and nutmeg for garnish
Rim a martini glass with cocoa powder and a few pinches of nutmeg. Add all of the liquid ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into the martini glass and enjoy.
Slow Ride
Slow Ride cocktail
Disaronno makes a killer liqueur called Velvet. It’s basically a creamy Amaretto, and I’m here for it. Cream liqueurs are fun and delicious cocktail ingredients all year long. This cocktail combines the flavors of almond, chocolate, vanilla, and a touch of coffee for a decadent drink.
1 oz Irish Cream
1 oz coffee liqueur
Shake well with cubed ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Top with whipped cream for extra fun.
Nutty Irishman Cocktail
Nutty Irishman cocktail
The Nutty Irishman began its life as a shot, similar to the Blowjob Shot; however, it’s made with hazelnut liqueur like Frangelico instead of almond liqueur like Amaretto. As with many cocktails, you’ll find several variations, some with Irish whiskey, and some with coffee. I am partial to the recipe that includes Irish whiskey and prefer it as a cocktail rather than a layered shot.
1 oz Frangelico
1 oz Irish Cream
Shake well with cubed ice and strain into a rocks glass over fresh cubed ice. Optionally, top with whipped cream.
Screaming Orgasm
Screaming Orgasm cocktail
And of course we cannot leave out the Screaming Orgasm cocktail. Another surviving cocktail from the 80s that is adjacent to the Blowjob shot. This is a potent cocktail and full of milky goodness, so beware the powers (and the calories) of the Screaming Orgasm!
1 ¼ oz vodka
1 ¼ oz coffee liqueur
1 ¼ oz Amaretto
1 ¼ oz Irish cream
1 ¼ oz half-and-half or non-dairy creamer
1 ¼ oz whole milk or non dairy milk
Chocolate powder
Shake all liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker with cubed ice until chilled. Strain over fresh pebbled or crushed ice in a large glass like a hurricane or pint glass. Sprinkle chocolate powder on top for garnish.
Note: Be sure to check the ingredients of the coffee liqueur and Irish cream you choose if you have issues with dairy.
Whichever way you choose to enjoy this shot or cocktail in its many forms, the flavors are delicious and stand the test of time.
