A six-ounce metal flask is different than the glass bottles whiskey comes in. For that reason, the higher-proof, robust spirits hold up better, retaining their complex notes of vanilla, oak, and spice when sipped on the go.
A practical guideline for filling the flask is 80 to 95 proof, which is a good, easy-sipping whiskey over several hours. Bump that up to 100-110 proof, and you are in the zone for a flask over a longer period of time. This range is not too high and offers full flavor without too much burn.
If you want to go up to 115 proof or higher, choose bold barrel-proof whiskeys that will hold their flavor over the long term in a flask and could benefit from a drop or two of water.
