Cocktail & Sons: Bar Syrups You Can Really Use

Many cocktail bars are proud of their creative homemade syrups. But sometimes the logistics of time, tedium, cost per drink and shelf life prohibit them from being economical to offer at every service, especially when they contain certain hard to find ingredients. Enter Cocktail & Sons, a line of syrups developed by bartender and drinks business veteran Max Messier specifically for creating key flavors in classic cocktails. They would also, of course, be versatile for other cocktail variations as well - fulfilling a variety of needs behind the bar.

Says Messier, “I did a solid amount of research into the marketplace for cocktail ingredients and discovered that tonics and grenadines litter the marketplace but there is little to no [commercial] syrups focused on classic and modern cocktails. I dug through my recipe book and focused on four types of syrups designed specifically for classic and modern cocktails including Old Fashioneds, Sazeracs, Margaritas, Daiquiris, etc.”

Each bottle of the four syrups - Spiced Demerara; Oleo Sacharum; Honeysuckle and Peppercorn; Mint and Lemon Verbena - has a different cocktail recipe printed on the back label as well as a non-alcoholic version too.

But these delicious modifiers aren’t available on the marketplace yet. That’s where you come in. A Kickstarter campaign has been set up so they can be released, and bartenders - both professional and home dabbler - can use them.

If you’ve ever tried to make your own oleo sacharum, you’ll know why this is a good idea for the bar.

Cheers!
