Char No. 4

Thanks to Sean Josephs, Cobble Hill's Smith St. finally got its own bourbon bar in 2008. Since its beginnings, Char No. 4 (named for a degree of char on the inside of a bourbon barrel - the light fixtures up front are even made to the exact measurements of one of them) has evolved into the ultimate American Whiskey destination in Brooklyn. It's widely considered a mandatory stop on any enthusiast's short list in the city, with its well curated wall of American whiskies that range from the cheap knockback to the rarest of rares, available in 1 or 2 oz pours. Other international whiskies such as Scotch and Japanese releases are also available, as well as wine and a few other spirits (hey, you have to make cocktails, right?) The food, thanks to their own on-premise meat smoker, is also fantastic. While there are some constants, such as the lamb pastrami, pork nuggets and shrimp and grits, the food is constantly evolving, including once a week prix fixe theme dinners that include a beer and 1 oz bourbon that change monthly, and one of the best weekend brunches in the city (with bourbon Bloody Mary's, of course!)
